South Africa took the lead after 10 minutes in their match against Guinea. Neo Maema gave the Bafana Bafana the lead from just inside the area after being set up by Thabiso Kutamela. Moussa Moise Camara equalised after 37 minutes to the keeper’s left after Mohamed Bangoura assisted him from the left of the area. Kutamela secured the points with the winner after 54 minutes after Wayde Jooste pulled it back to him from the right of the area. Towards the end of normal time Aboubacar Bangoura was left cursing his luck as his shot rebounded off the woodwork with the keeper, Samukelo Xulu beaten. Both sides had chances to add to their respective tallies, but failed to do so.
Meanwhile, co-hosts Uganda dispatched Niger 2-0 – Allan Okello scored the winner after 25 minutes – a header from the rebound as Mahamadou Tanja saved his penalty, but was powerless to deny him twice. Abdourahamane Djibo received a yellow card after 23 minutes for fouling Reagan Mpande and the penalty was given after an intervention by VAR. Joel Sserunjogi doubled their lead after 56 minutes with a powerful shot into the top corner – Okello set him up.
