They were ordered to play them again, but to give the Kenyans a chance. They lost 13-1 to Uganda in the Gossage Cup in 1931 \u2013 it remains the worst mauling in the tournament\u2019s history. By the time the African champion, African team of the 1960s visited te land of the Masai Mara and Rift Valley, there had been a sporting overhaul. Kenya had become renowned for its athletes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sporting Renown<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a fair comment; Kenya is known in athletics more than football,\u201d Biwott said. Over the years Kenyan athletes have dominated the world stage, especially the 3000 metres Steeplehase. Their middle and long distance athletes were formidable, starting mainly in the 1960s, although the signs were there in the 1950s too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Kenya\u2019s sporting prowess began earlier and Biwott was not aware of it until last year \u2013 the Gossage Cup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI now know the significance [of the Gossage Cup Centenary] and I can also see the significance of having it in May,\u201d Biwott said. \u201cThe significant point [of May 1<sup>st<\/sup> and May 3<sup>rd<\/sup> 2026] is that Kenyans must get to know that football has been in Kenya for quite some time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/empowersmag.com\/empowersmagwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/DSC07786.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4650\" srcset=\"https:\/\/empowersmag.com\/empowersmagwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/DSC07786.jpg 640w, https:\/\/empowersmag.com\/empowersmagwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/DSC07786-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/empowersmag.com\/empowersmagwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/DSC07786-195x146.jpg 195w, https:\/\/empowersmag.com\/empowersmagwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/DSC07786-50x38.jpg 50w, https:\/\/empowersmag.com\/empowersmagwp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/DSC07786-100x75.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Landi Mawe Grounds<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Forgotten History<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In February 1957 the newly founded Conf\u00e9d\u00e9ration Africaine de Football (CAF) held its inaugural Africa Cup of Nations in Khartoum. But it was far from the first international tournament in African history \u2013 that honour belongs to East Africa. On May 1<sup>st<\/sup> 1926 Kenya and Uganda drew 1-1 at Nairobi\u2019s Landi Mawe Grounds, necessitating a replay on May 3<sup>rd<\/sup>, which Kenya won 2-1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Gossage Cup lasted until 1966 \u2013 it was briefly replaced by the East and Central African Senior Challenge Cup, which lasted until 1971.
